Lord Shiva: The Pioneer of Disruptive Innovation

“May the elements of creation abide within me in perfection.

May the greatest that can be that in the world be created by me, by us, by all living beings.

I honor this divine potential manifested by Shiva for universal benefit.”

– (Panchakshri Mantra.)

Time is a great transformational tool that experiences our four stages of life and defines our complete lifetime in a boundless, cosmic platform. Time is eternal, created from the breath of a divine energy nourishing the cosmos. We have seen ourselves even nature being used as small tools in hands of Eternal time. Be those blazing tremors, sweeping tsunami, crawling sensations of earthquake or fury of a volcano we have witnessed all these natural disasters perform on the earth.

Mythology affirms that God is beyond time, form, space, sound and holds the power to create or destroy time and universe in a fraction of seconds.

God Shiva is the lord of eternity, full of life commanding the powers of destruction and transformational creation. He is seen in his tremendous avatar of Rudra, as a destructive form of almighty, destroying everything into nothing. Shiva has done such destruction innumerable times in different ways – subtle or harsh, but still as he recreates the world perfectly we are never able to understand if he destroyed or recreated? He plays the role of a goldsmith dissolving the existing jewellery to recreate purer gold that can be used to create another adornment with exquisite design and precision.

Shiva represents the higher self, where one is willingly to transcend forward and evolve to cosmic existence.

Shiv, in true sense is the primitive pioneer of evolutionary energy and innovation.

Innovation is introducing new products in market to face survival times. Not only organizations but countries and continents are racing to build a strong innovation culture that opens doors of sustainable performance for them. Moving ahead, even individuals do innovate themselves by learning new skills, developing personality, knowledge, integrating innovation in their domain to be more acknowledged and successful.

With more than ten types of innovation in market, disruptive innovation is an innovation that disrupts existing arrangement bringing in more improvements or value-added advantages to recreate better. The characteristics are derived from user research process targeted at specific consumer base to provide a definite contour in the broad Disruptive innovation nomenclature.

Tandava is a vigorous form of Shiva’s dance which dissolves to recreate the process of creation, preservation, disruption and recreation in the universe. The tool is symbol of life cycles which includes creating and destructing like daily rhythm of life and death. This is the way the Tandava tool is able to balance this perishable world. Tandava is Shiva’s powerful tool of disruption innovation for sustenance of new creation.

Shiva’s crescent moon indicates we should have a perfect thought process with alertness about the environment around us. This quality is of significance to innovators as they need to have a complete knowledge of market and be alert on the market movement. Moon denotes that innovators should think a hundred times and then take a step forward.

Shiva is seated on or draped in a tiger skin in his meditative trance contemplating his next creative cycle. The tiger skin represents high potential energy in the wearer which is expected to be a most important attribute of an innovator. The potential energy of the innovator should be a vital aspect driving the entire innovation process in a potential form to conquer the aim.

Thomas Edison, Wright brothers, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Sergey Bin, Bill Gates and many others who delivered what they imagined based on their potential.

Kamandalu, a vessel containing nectar is always spotted on a ground next to Shiva. This Kamandalu is not made of gold or silver but from a dry pumpkin similarly innovators need to focus on use of natural resources, care for environment, conserve energy and ensure sustainability is a top focus point when innovation is created.

Hour Glass Drum is combination of two triangles separated by a thin line structure. The drum known as damru provides sound for the Tandava dance. The sound of drum is heard only in deep meditation. For an innovator, this drum is a tool for user research in which innovator needs to listen to user’s needs, preference in deep attention and empathy.

Flowing Ganga from Shiva’s copper-matted long and sensuous tresses denotes exuberance, fertility and noble cause of supporting life on earth. Innovation should be done in high-spirits, liveliness and enthusiasm but philosophy of human welfare should be considered for well-being of humans and society.

Snakes necklace and Rudrakshas represents law, order and justice which are the fundamentals of any science, including science of disruption. The innovation should not violate the well-being or harmony in the environment.

Trident represents action, willpower, knowledge the three essential qualities for every disruptive innovator. The innovator should possess the capacity to convert his ideas into action with tremendous willpower and expert knowledge.

Nandi, his bull keeps waiting for Shiva to wake from meditation, listening to the cosmos. He removes ignorance; bequeath wisdom upon Shiva’s followers. This is how the innovator should educate; convince users about the purpose of innovation and how we mutually can progress with the invention.

His dance in the hot red flames, rising from his tongue and left hand tells us everything will be consumed over a period of time and hence we need to keep up the pace.

Lord Shiv and his Shiv-tattav (principles), reproduction power in reality are also the elements of Disruptive innovation. As we connect these incredible symbols, myths, cosmic tools to the science of Disruption Innovation it is clearly visible that the God of Destruction is the original pioneer of Disruption Innovation.

“Whatever are the origins of Shiv, as described in the sacred puranas and vedas, the inherent characteristics within him and role played in the cosmic activity of universe, can be clearly considered to be an art or science of Disruption Innovation.”
